A backdrop is simply a painted curtain that hangs in the back of the stage while a live play is being performed and gives an indication of the scenery. They are a very common element of theatrical productions and can depict various scenes. Multiple drops can be used in one production, as typically scenes change a few times over the course of a play.

Drops can be hung by various means and be sized and painted accordingly. The most common way is from the top to be pressed between two pieces of lumber and clamped to a pipe with another pipe or a chain, which is then placed through a hem pocket at the bottom. This gives the drop weight and ensures it does not sway or flap during the play.

The roll-up drop is perhaps the oldest method. This is when the bottom of the drop is attached to a round batten. The drop is subsequently rolled onto the batten from the back and is deployed on the stage by a rigged rope. These ropes are maneuvered through a pulley system from offstage and can unroll it how the stage manager sees fit.
